Also, it's preferable to watch the Chinese VCD in a web player because once burned onto DVDR, big chances, like the orig. chinese VCD of mine has 2 audio channels (with a different languages in each) which can be quite annoying. It was impossible for me to choose one spoken language cos unlike a DVD, there are no audio folder. Though maybe if you have a home theatre system, it is perhaps possible to shut down one audio-channel and just hear one spoken language.



Again, I recommend to watch these VCD films through a web-player.



Subtitles can be hard-to-read at time being the fact it is white on image.

FLIRTONG SCHOLAR



This film is different from many other films starring Stephen Chow. It's in the very Chinese tradition/context (costumes with hats, big long beard, etc.). It's a mixture of comedy, romance and action (great kung-fu/choregraphy scenes!very imaginative) . Stephen Chow is a very rich artist (painter and a poet) called Tong Pak Fu and lives with 8 wives with his mother. Still unhappy, he will suddenly fall in love with Gong Li when she distribute food for the poors. He will then try to catch her eyes by disguising himself as a poor man begging food. In the meantime, some people are after him and he needs to flee. He will take refuge at the house where Ging Li lives (among many other women) and offer his services as a servant always trying to hide his identity. He has to because her mother told him that this family (Evil Scholar) was the ennemy of her own family which i beleive his father die because of them which is why he needs to pretend to be a poor man while trying desperately to seduce Chou-heung (Gong Li). The mother of Gong Li (an actress playing in God of Cookery - she wa that crazy judge in the final contest) is a very strict and mean women. She also has trouble with the goverment (the majesty) and while fighting, Stephen (named Wah On as the servant in that house) will help out with his kung-fu abilities. These mean people are also after the search of the painter/poet ... Stephen will have to try to win the love of his life (Gong Li), save that ennemy family in return and try to hide his identity. While the whole family is against Chow's family and him in particular, Gong Li will admit to the servant Stephen Chow that she is secretly reading his poems and love his arts unlike the rest of her family which will tempt him many times to reveal his true identity. There are many obstacles for Chow through this journey. This is a very original film i find and is one of my favorite for the originality of the kung-fu scenes and scenario. Again, you will see familiar faces (the ennemy cook from God of Cookery is also appearing in this film) . It's a film I highly recommend !
